Lithium-ion batteries are soon to be trailed by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (Arena) to boost the consumption of renewable energy. Arena has allocated $450,000 subsidy for the three-year trail. IT Power, an energy consulting firm will manage the trail in which lithium-ion batteries will be used in place of lead-acid batteries in electricity grids.

At the Canberra Institute of Technology, IT Power will test each battery after regular intervals of charging and discharging cycles. Arena CEO Ivor Frischknecht has stated that the outcome of the experiment will be shared with the power companies, researchers and investors aligned with Arena’s commitment to knowledge sharing.
